Wisconsin Whereabouts
At 65,498 square miles, the state is geographically the nation's 23rd-largest state.  It is also the nation's 20th most populous state with 5,556,506 residents. Wisconsin residents' median income ranks as 15th-highest in the nation at $47,220. Its capital is Madison and its largest city is Milwaukee. The state touches two of the five Great Lakes and is also bordered by the Montreal River, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. The Mississippi, Menominee and St. Croix Rivers also run through Wisconsin. To the north is the Lake Superior Lowland, to the south is the Northern Highland and the 1.5 million-acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and thousands of glacier lakes. The Central Plain is rich farmland and the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands in the southeast has many of the state's largest cities. In the southwest is the Western Upland, a mixture of forest and farmland. About 46% of the state is covered by forest.

Recreation
The state's varied landscape makes it a popular outdoor recreation destination. In the winter, the state offers skiing, ice fishing and snowmobile derbies. Door County draws in many tourists with its beautiful sights, quaint villages, popular fish boils, and cherry picking. The state ranks 4th in the nation for the number of square miles of lakes, making for many water and ice pond activities. Under the management of the National Park Service is the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore along Lake Superior, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the North Country National Scenic Trail, and the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway. These areas, along with the Chquamegon-Nicolet National Forest provide endless opportunities for outdoor and scenic activities.

Education
Wisconsin, along with Minnesota and Michigan, pioneered the idea of the American state university movement after the Civil War. Public colleges in Wisconsin include the 26 campuses of the University of Wisconsin system and the 16 campuses of the Wisconsin Technical College System. Private institutions of higher education include Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Medical College of Wisconsin, Edgewood College, Beloit College, Lawrence University and many more. Endless public and private school districts serve the state, many of which are recognized as being among the best in the nation.
